Wedding Popcorn
Jan. 16th, 2003 10:56 amMemo to self: Seven hours of sleep is not enough. Seven hours of sleep with weird dreams is WAY not enough. *sigh*
I was talking to Alex yesterday about all the people we know who have gotten engaged lately. We counted up the couples we know who are getting married this year. The grand total? Six. Six couples THIS YEAR. Six weddings that we will be doing our best to attend. There’s a seventh, but that one’s happening next year. (That’s my maid of honor—congratulations, Heidi! *cheers*) It seems almost like one engagement sparks off a bunch.
In any case, a friend of mine, Jonathan, came up with this great metaphor for the “wedding phenomenon.” He mentioned that weddings/engagements are like popcorn. When popcorn is heating, several kernels in the same area are usually at the same stage in the whole popping process. When one pops, it jostles the others nearby, and those kernels pop, too. They were ready to pop, anyway. According to Jon, engagements are the same way. When one couple “pops,” the ones around them, who were ready to “pop” anyway, “pop” shortly after. Is this where the phrase “pop the question” came from? Somehow, I doubt it. Heh.
And now, QUIZZES!
