First of all, I'd like to thank all the nifty spiffy people who left comments of support on my last entry. For those people, I'd like to say that the ring is FOUND. It was in the very bottom of my purse, where it had slipped off my finger and decided to relax in the darkness and cause untold havoc. Naughty ring. It's on my finger now. Hugs to all who sent prayers and happy thoughts my way.

My job is over. Sadness and woe. I find myself, once again, unemployed. I will be unemployed at least for the next week so that I can get final projects done, but then...here's hoping for a job! I still gotta pay off tuition and buy Alex's wedding ring! Still, the people I worked with gave me a great send-off--they all signed a card and gave me chocolate and told me they'd miss me. Strokes to the ego are nice. I'll miss them a lot, too. That was the best job I've ever had.

And now...*gasp*...the first part of the Tsunami Saga! This is copyrighted to ME. No takee. Reviews, comments, and constructive criticism are welcome.

TSUNAMI STORY: BEGINNING

Storms often chase one another on and off the shores of Kahluah in mid-spring. The Kahluahans have learned to wait out the storms for as long as they last, accepting them for what they are—-part of the Great Cycle of the Creator.

One night in early summer, however—the night of the Sword Dance—-an unexpected storm blew up, sending both Dancers and audience dashing for their homes to escape the raging winds and pelting hailstones. Green and violet lightning tore fiery cracks in the darkening sky, setting the Sea aglow where the bright forks touched its foaming surface. The thunder rolled like an avalanche, drowning out the children’s whimpers and making any conversation impossible. Families huddled together in the darkness, the flashes outside highlighting the grim and frightened faces of people who were determined to wait out one more storm.

***
The hail tapered off by morning, taking with it the dark clouds and strange lights. By the time the sun rose, the thunder had grumbled its way down to a far-away murmur. The only wind was a gentle breze from the Sea that caressed the faces of the Kahluahans as they emerged from their homes to assess the damage left by the storm.

Luckily, most of the lightning had struck the Sea, rather than the village. The high winds had wreaked havoc with the Sword Dance area, however, scattering decorations, food, and even ceremonial weapons up and down the beach. Tarana, Chieftess of Kahluah, organized work parties and sent them out to start cleaning up the mess.

Metea made her way carefully down the shore, picking up bits of food and cloth. Just about everything had been torn to shreds by the storm; only the weapons had survived unharmed. She hefted a sword, carrying it briskly toward the growing pile of metal further up the beach.

Metea’s six-year-old nephew, Nekkoh, followed quietly in her footsteps, picking up small scraps that she dropped and looking for more. Abruptly, he stopped and stared down at the Sea, his brown eyes shining. A few seconds later, he was racing down the beach toward the water, moving fast across the hard-packed sand.

“Nekkoh!” Metea called, but he either didn’t hear her or ignored her entirely. Within moments, he disappeared behind a large rock. With a muttered curse, Metea dropped the trash she was carrying and raced after Nekkoh. The Sea was always most dangerous just after a storm, and Metea was sure it would be even more so after the wild, eerie storm of the night before.

When Metea found Nekkoh, however, he was crouching beside a calm Sea in a small cove, crooning softly to something Metea couldn’t see. Beside him, a shining sword that Metea recognized as her own stood upright, driven half its length into the wet sand.

“Nekkoh!” Metea scolded as she moved toward him. “What do you mean by running off like that?!”

Nekkoh turned around as soon as he heard Metea’s voice and made shushing noises, his eyes wide. “Ssh!” he whispered. “You’ll wake the baby.”

“Baby?” Metea repeated, surprised. Looking over Nekkoh’s shoulder, she gasped at what she saw.

*chuckles* It looks effortless, I s'pose, but it isn't. This baby has been over a year in the making...and I have notes on cultures, the way the world is set up, where people came from, the whole history of the world, legends, the whole bit. I still don't know everything...but I've got a lot. ^_^

Thank you very much for the compliment! *snugs* It means a lot to me, coming from you. ^_^
