I'm Happy...I'm Happy!
Apr. 10th, 2002 08:07 amWell, I'm happy now. Thank you, all you spiffy, nifty people who left comments and let me know that this LJ is not being neglected. ^_^
I'm quite hungry right now. Shouldn't have missed breakfast.
SOON, I shall have my webpage up! I'm taking a web design class, and I think I'll totally redesign it AGAIN...maybe. But I promise that galleries of art will be up soon. If you want to check out what art I already have up, go to www.geocities.com/elfie42, and try not to mind the evil popup windows. If anybody has information on where I can get cheap webspace without popup windows, PLEASE let me know. Also, information about reliable, inexpensive domain name registration would also be appreciated.
And now, some RAMBLING!
Style is a very interesting thing. Alex and I went to a spot called Hot Topic yesterday, looking for a bikini for me. (We didn't find the bikini...well, we found it, but it wasn't what we thought I was going to be. Brr. *shudders*) Hot Topic is a store at the mall for people who want to be different, I think. They have some very interesting clothing, and almost ALL of it is primarily black, with accents of red and white. Most of the clothing is either 80's retro (which I love, CARE BEARS RULE!) or very dark and cynical (Actual T-shirt, black with mainly messy white lettering: "Popularity is a social disease."). The point I want to make, however, is that this 'different' clothing costs just as much, if not more than, any other type of clothing that you would buy at the mall.
Now,
I pride myself on creating my own style, and I enjoy wearing clothing that, shall we say, sets me apart from everyone else. This style ranges from wearing medieval clothing in the mundane world to wearing brilliant colors when everyone else is wearing muted shades. Generally, however, I just wear what I want. It has nothing to do with the current trends, though I may see something that someone else is wearing and think, "Gee, that's cool! I want one of those!"
However, the style put forward by Hot Topic is every bit as image-oriented as the style put forward by The Gap. If you don't believe me, look around. People seem to want to fit into a group. Everyone needs to belong. My question is this: Do clothes make you belong to a particular group? My guess would be No. No matter what you wear, you're still yourself. You can build up an image, wear the right clothes, style your hair the right way, put on the right makeup, etc., but you'll still be you. No matter how elaborate your facade, someone will see that you're not being honest with yourself or the rest of the world, and then what do you do? What do you do when somebody sees through the mask?
Now, I understand that we all have different aspects that we show to different people. I act a little differently around some of my friends than I do around others, and I'm definitely different around people I know well than I am when I'm around strangers. We all have our secrets and our private dreams. But that doesn't mean that we can't act like the people we truly are! I tend to be a little 'in-your-face' about this, because I know that there are some awesome people out there who are hiding! Be honest, be yourself! If someone rejects you because of who you are, that's their loss, not yours.
Why am I even ranting about this? Well, it's probably because I don't want to have to dig for the fun, odd people in this world. Call me lazy. I went to a very liberal Community College (which is where I am now, in class, BAD ELFIE!) for two years before transferring to a pretty conservative private college. Once I made the transfer, I looked around and asked myself, "Where are the people like me? All these people look the same!" After a while, I got better at spotting the creative people, but I never felt at home there.
I am, obviously, just as guilty as the next person of judging by appearances. Some of the most creative people I know spend most of their time in blue jeans and T-shirts and look relatively normal. I have also discovered why, or at least part of the reason--do you know how LONG it takes to get dressed up in the morning, particularly in medieval/pseudo-medieval clothing? You have to coordinate the outfit, not to mention putting it on (so many layers!). It's soo much easier to just grab a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, make sure your socks match, and head out the door (putting the clothing on first, of course). For a busy person, this is the way to go.
Well, this is enough ranting for now. Comments? Questions? Alternate Rants? Let me know. Gotta actually concentrate on class now...I hate Macs.

Re: RAWR!
Yes, Hot Topic can be a very freaky place, but it is still fun. I love all the retro-80's stuff there...including Care Bears shirts. ^_^ They also have all this nifty stuff with faeries on it! Yay!
I, too, am a jeans and T-shirts kind of girl....*nodnods* Can't live without my jeans! Sooooo comfy!
