Please don't be misled by the comma in the title. The tired rant is ABOUT Dark Dungeons.
As many of you know, Dark Dungeons is a comic-book-type tract by Jack T. Chick that came out in the 80's. It tells us that D&D is evil and of Satan, that D&D players (and, by extension, roleplayers in general) are witches and worshippers of evil, and that if our characters die, so will we. Also, if we RP, we will burn in Hell.
Well, my friends, it's not true. As a Christian roleplayer, I am offended by Mr. Chick's allegations. I am also offended that he lumps me in with the loonies that star in this crazy tract. Firstly: the people I RP with are spiffy, pretty normal people with no major psychological problems that I know of. I wouldn't let the people in Mr. Chick's tract anywhere NEAR a gaming table, especially that GM! Using D&D to corrupt young minds and lure them against their fragile wills into a secret coven society...for shame! Seriously, folks. These players have no willpower at all. You could convince them that they need to get up on the table and yodel while dancing the hula in order to stay in the game, and they'd do it. Talk about obsessive.
While I am a Christian and I do have Christian ideals, I also play D&D occasionally and I don't believe in burning books, as they do in the last bit of this tract. These people probably burned Harry Potter, too. I understand that they're trying to help people, but I truly believe that there are better ways of doing it. Also, once again, Mr. Chick has not done his research. Remember, back in the 80's, when nobody was allowed to play D&D because it was 'evil' and some idiots went into the sewers and got lost and built dangerous dungeons in their basements? People played it anyway, and they were safe. There will always be people who shouldn't RP, period. They take it waaaay too seriously. Remember this: When you RP, a character is JUST a character. You may really like that character, but the point of RP is that, if your GM is cruel enough to kill off your character, you can always roll up another one. If you can't do that, you probably shouldn't RP. End of story. Also, if you believe that RP is evil, then you shouldn't do it. My point is that God does not tell you that RP is evil. The Bible says nothing about RP that I know of. If anybody finds a verse that has to do with RP, let me know. I'd be interested.
Here's another question: Why does RP have to be a battle between Christians and non-Christians? I don't understand. I just don't get it. Someone explain this, please? Soon. When I'm awake.
This has been a good day. I got a massage. I am happy. ^_^ This is probably why I can't work up the necessary irritation to really rant about Dark Dungeons. I think part of that is also that I realize that Mr. Chick is trying to do what he believes is right, but he's going about it the wrong way with this particular tract. Sorry, Mr. Chick, but it really doesn't work that way, at least not in my experience. You may know what you're talking about in other circumstances, but not here. D&D is just a game. It's not a mind-sucking cult. In fact, for another rant on the same subject, since I'm bored with it and I need sleep,go here: Critical Miss: Dark Dungeons. Unfortunately, their link to the actual tract doesn't work, so I'll try to find a link if I have time and if anybody's interested.
Enough about D&D. It's 1:00 am, and I should have been in bed hours ago. Here are some ( quiz results! Byeeeee! )
