An Interesting Phenomenon
May. 31st, 2002 01:55 pmFascinating.
I have two comments in response to a single quiz I posted, but no comments on my insightful philosophical ramblings. Why is that? Just for that, you get more self-indulgent philosophical ramblings, just because I'm in a class where I'm using a Mac and it makes me feel EVIL! MWAHAHAHAHAHA! Umm...yeah. Seriously, though...
I've been thinking for the past week or so about why I write (LJ and otherwise), and why anybody writes. These are my theories:
1. People write to get attention. There is very little that is more gratifying than having someone else read your work and admire you for it. And if lots of people want to read it--that's even better!
2. People write to express their most private thoughts and remember them later. This is under the heading of private journals and diaries. Sometimes, just having a chronicle of your life is a great thing so you can see how far you've come, how you've changed, etc.
3. People write to COMMUNICATE. This is the big one for me. After much thought, I have decided that this is the main reason that I write. (Of course, I love attention, too.) I want to share my thoughts, my dreams, my stories with the world. I want to be understood, to be heard, to have my views and my characters acknowledged. That's probably why I have an LJ. I don't think I'm the only writer out there who feels this way, either, even if it's just on a subconscious level for some people.
What do you, the Writers At Home, think? Do you agree/disagree with my theories? Do you have theories of your own? Let me know! *nodnods*
Hrrm. You have been nice people and read my thoughts. Therefore, you get...QUIZ RESULTS! Next entry. Yep. At school now; must work. Or get food...tummyrumbles. Yis.

I agree with your theories...there are probably more subtle reasons, but I think for the most part they can be classified in those three main categories. Writing to communicate incorporates a lot, a little of everythign, maybe even a bit of your other two categories. If people are writing to communitate, they are writing things that people will read, which in turn does get attention. And sometimes people write their private thoughts just becuase they need to get them out of their head, and it sometimes does well for a person to know others are reading their thoughts; it sometimes takes the weight off of the heavy burdens of private though...just my opinion though ^_^ Eesh, I rambled and it's not even my own journal!
