The Further Adventures of Elfie

Well. It has been some time.

Life continues unabated, for those who want to know.

That was a terribly awkward sentence. Let me try again.

For those who want to know, my life continues unabated. I cannot guarantee the same for many of those who want to know, in general. Many of those famous want-to-knowers, such as Albert Einstein and Leonardo da Vinci are, sadly, deceased. Their lives do not continue unabated as they moulder (I assume) in their respective final resting places. Or dessicate. In any case, whatever they are doing, I just wanted to make it clear that, while my life continues unabated, the lives of many who want to know do not. I mention this only so that people understand properly what it is that I am trying to say.

If you are still reading this entry, congratulations! You have made it past what is probably the most blather-filled section! Have a cookie while you continue to read. I'll wait while you get one.

*waits*

Here is the update: My mother's mother, brother, and sister-in-law came up from California to visit the weekend before last. It was lovely to see them. My grandmother knits, and I believe that she was pleased with the progress I was making on the baby blanket on which I am currently working. I always enjoy chatting with my relations, especially when I get a word in edgewise. (My aunt talks a lot. I suspect that she has mastered the art of circular breathing. I don't mind, though; she's fun to listen to.) We ate at our house for lunch on Saturday, and then at Mum's house for dinner. Alex made a pork roast with apples that I very much hope he repeats, plus risotto. Mmmm, risotto. Mom made some delicious turkey and mashed potatoes. Mmm, mashed potatoes. Starches are good.

The certain arrival of relatives and the expressed hope from my grandmother that she would be able to see our house sent Alex and me into EXTREME CLEANING MODE. The upshot of this is that the house is OMG CLEAN. There are a few areas that could still use some work, but all of the living areas are clean. These areas include the living room/den, the formal dining room, the master bedroom, and the master bathroom. We also scrubbed all of the toilets in the house (except, I think, for the upstairs toilet, but it never gets used anyway) and vacuumed the floors. Alex and I have managed to keep these areas clean for over two weeks now, and we've also made advances on the rest of the house. This pleases me greatly.

While we cleaned, Alex also experienced Return of the Mummy, the Rodent Version. He found another sadly dessicated mouse corpse under some cardboard. We mourned the mouse's passing by putting it in the garbage. Barbaric, I know, but we had no time for further formalities.

Grandma was quite impressed with the house, and we were glad. We were also quite exhausted. Cleaning is good exercise!

Two nights ago brought us further Mousey Adventures. As I was reading my homework, I saw something small and dark race across the floor and (I thought) leap up onto the hearth in the living room. There was still a lot of stuff there, so there was definitely room for a small rodent to hide. At first, I wasn't sure if I had actually seen anything--I only caught sight of it out of the corner of my eye, and it was so fast--but, moments later, Loki stalked into the room and assumed the Hunting Position. This position seems to involve a swishing tail and an intense stare. He flushed out the mouse and chased it underneath my couch. It was at this point that Alex and I decided to assist Loki in hunting the elusive mouse, so I went and got our usual tool: the wire mesh wastepaper basket. We then proceeded to chase the mouse back and forth, back and forth, between my couch and Alex's. Then Loki flushed it out again and chased it into the dining room. Away sped the mouse! Loki caught it and actually had it in his mouth when Alex arrived. Alex's sudden appearance startled Loki, who dropped the mouse, who promptly took that opportunity to dash under the bar cabinet. Loki decided to go and hide under the bed, leaving Alex and me to deal with our furry visitor.

Alex scared the mouse out from under the cabinet, and I slammed the wastepaper basket over the rodent, trapping it. Or did I? The light was bad, and I couldn't see the mouse. It turned out that I did manage to catch it, but, the moment the cage came down, the agile little creature climbed the wire mesh and hid itself in the darkness of one of the upper corners.

We slid a piece of cardboard under the basket, and Alex carried the mouse to the door, roaring the entire way, "STAAAAY OUUUUUUT OF THE HOUUUUUUUUUUSE!" He then tossed the mouse outside. The mouse streaked into a pile of leftover Christmas garlands, where I hope it stayed until it had recovered enough to venture into the world again. We did not stay to check, though we did examine the wastepaper basket very thoroughly before bringing it back into the house.

Other than that, life has been relatively tame. I've been going to classes, and those have been all right. I'm a bit concerned about the fact that one of my classes has no tests--my entire grade rests on two papers and my attendance. The other class has a midterm and a final, plus two papers. No other assignments serve to mitigate the horrific consequences of me bombing any of these tasks. I'm sure you can see why these circumstances bother me slightly.

We went to the dump today, which means that my office is a good deal cleaner. Yay!

I hope to update this journal a bit more often than I have been. Amusing things have happened, as well, but I can't remember the clever things that I was going to say about them.

TUNE IN NEXT TIME FOR THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF ELFIE!
