elfie_chan: MY cup of tea! (Default)

Besides being appropriate for this entry, this icon is entirely [livejournal.com profile] alysaundre's fault. He said the words; I merely brought the icon into being. However, I forsee a rash of "Rrruffs have rrridges!" icons coming on. There are so many pictures for which such a phrase would make sense. Including the following.

[livejournal.com profile] alysaundre and I went to The True Arte of Defense in Couer du Val last Saturday. It was a good deal of fun. It was also incredibly relaxed. I cannot express how lovely it was to be able to just sit around and knit and observe and chat with wonderful people, including [livejournal.com profile] lady_anyanka and [livejournal.com profile] brother_al, my parents. We carpooled with the lovely [livejournal.com profile] fearga, who teamed up with me to create the winning entry for the Artisan's Take-Down! We won through both extreme skill and guile. Though, honestly, I don't think this project required much guile--most people looked at it and remarked, "Awwwwww!" Some of them, including [livejournal.com profile] fearga and I, just laughed hysterically.

This is the fully-documentable Elizabethan Kitten. I created the kitten, and [livejournal.com profile] fearga created the ruff. Both are completely hand-made out of period materials. Admire the teensy tassels!

Here is the Elizabethan Kitten again, viewed from the side. It is every bit as adorable from this angle. See the couching? That is my first attempt at couching. Couching with that particular silver stuff is a pain.

And here is the Elizabethan Kitten from behind! Unfortunately, the embroidery on the tail is a tad blurry. Trust me; it looks fine.

In this photo, the Elizabethan Kitten displays its excellent taste and color coordination by posing next to Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion.

All in all, the Elizabethan Kitten wielded the power given to all tiny, handmade kittens and carried the day. [livejournal.com profile] fearga and I came home with a lovely blue leather gauntlet (which fits none of us, but would work well for youth combat), a brown wool hood (which also fit none of us, but went home with [livejournal.com profile] fearga for her lovely daughter), and a very punny iron "E". We also brought home the kitten, which now resides in my workbasket.

And speaking of tiny handmade kittens: several of you have asked what the knitted kittens look like. I finally have some photos. I also need to post the final instructions for kitten assembly (thank you to [livejournal.com profile] hlmauera for taking the photos for that), but that will come later.

These are some of the kittens that I made for Egil's 33. Some became prizes, some became thank-yous, and one became a baby shower present. I honestly only planned to make three to five of them. There are twelve in this photo; I believe that fifteen total went to Egil's.

In this photo, one of the kittens is playtested by Loki. Loki is unamused, as this particular kitten has just beaned him between his glowing eyes.

In other news, I have been obsessed with socks lately. I can now make socks without even looking at a pattern, and that pleases me greatly. I made a pair of socks for Egil's. These socks can do tricks!

Technically, socks should not be able to do this when they are clean. The Amazing Purple Sock stands with no visible support! The Sock's Secret: It is knitted with bulky yarn on size 2 needles. Kids, don't try this at home.

The Amazing Purple Sock stands on its top and toes at the same time! *applause*

The Amazing Purple Sock is resting. Shh.

I think that's enough for now. Next entry: [livejournal.com profile] elfie_chan's forays into the Black Sheep Gathering and the Saga of [livejournal.com profile] alysaundre's Socks!

*squees at the Elizabethan Kitty* That is awesome!!!!!! Now, what is couching? lol

*squees some more at the other kitties* I love 'em! And now I finally know what you're talking about *chuckles* ^_~

*applauds the purple sock* Sorry, the Amazing Purple Sock ^_~. Pardon me ^_~. Bulky yarn...on size 2's??? Yikes! Quick knit though, right? Well, relatively, anyway.

So....how long do we have to wait for the BSG entry?

At least one day. I have to take pictures of the Stash Extensions!

The bulky yarn on size 2s makes for crampy hands, especially when one gets to the decreases. Ouch! They are incredibly warm, though...50% wool and 50% llama! And they were relatively quick, mainly because I didn't do a pattern or anything on them.

You made me laugh a lot.
I have some lemon poppyseed biscotti and I make excellent cheesecakes. You should come over for coffee. Canada is closer than Russia, after all...

Remind me...where in Canada are you located? Alex and I will be in Canada in January, but I don't know if we'll be in your neck of the woods...

Cheesecake is one of my particular temptations. How did you know?!

I was forced to guess, but it was a very good guess.
I live an hour's drive from Toronto. Are you going to be in Ontario? If so then perhaps we can meet up!

I think that coming to Ontario would be a blast!

I'm all psyched about going to Canada...I've never been there before.

P. s. NOTHING is more full of guile than a kitten! No one expects the knitten imposition! (runs off snickering)

Kitten? Adorable. Ruff? Too cute. Together? Almost a hyperglycemia attack. You guys are scary ...

I think that the kitten would be nowhere near as cute without the ruff. The ruff makes the whole thing work.

We've already started plotting others...mwahaha.

*squints* Is that bobbin lace on Elizabethan kitty's ruff? It (and the teeny ruff) are gorgeous! Oh goodness I want one. :D Did you make up a pattern, or just wing it? I'm very tempted to try my hand at a puppy, now.

Your socks are HILARIOUS. One could forgo shoes entirely, in something that sturdy.

You have an excellent eye! That is, indeed, bobbin lace, though it is commercially made (we didn't have time to get our hands on any handmade lace). The kitty is my own pattern, based on the knitted kitty pattern pieces. I learned that linen does not stretch like knitted pieces. However, the next kitten will be more proportionate.

They are good socks. We will not see their like again--mostly because they were a pain to knit!
